I currently work within the IT Industry providing 1st and 2nd line support but I am needing a change in career - computers no longer hold my interest and I am not keen on learning more about them which will obviously affect my work if I am not moving on with the ever changing technologies.
I am very much interested in properties i.e. Estate Agent or Property Management but I don't think I have the necessary skills for that but I am in a rut as I have 2 small kids under 5 and my husband is currently out of work so pulling out of the rat race to retrain is not feasible.
I don't really know what my question is but can someone tell me the best way to change your career and possibly suggest job roles which may suit someone that has worked within a helpdesk environment which seems like forever!
Thanks Lisa :)How to change career at 28 with over 8 years IT Support experience?
First of all, identify some places that are hiring ';estate agent/prop mgmt'; people.
Secondly, figure out what it takes (skills) to be an Estate Agent/Prp Mgmt person.
Thirdly, identify the skills you have - esp after 8 years in your job - you are probably a quick learner, good at dealing with people, understand technology, complexities of computers, etc - a lot of these skills are transferable to Estate Agent/Prop Mgmt (i think).
Fourthly, apply in person to the jobs - bring your resume. Do like a cold call - try to speak to the hiring manger - show your passion for the job.
When asked why you are switching industries - explain you like challenges, that you are up to the task, that the fact that you don't have Estate Agent/PM experience is NOT a liability, it's an asset - you can learn quickly - and you'll be able to solve problems and think differently than people who have been doing this jobs for years.
Finally - do you have any friends/neighbours/relatives/people you know/... who are doing Estate A/PM work? Maybe they can help you get a foot in the door.
Good luck! How to change career at 28 with over 8 years IT Support experience?
No choice here. You better keep going for now if your working, obviously changing now isn't feasible. There will be time later but take care of really pulling out the stops.
