I work in investment banking and make just below six figures right now. I want to go and get my MBA and pursue a marketing career, but for what I'm planning on doing I will most likely take a hefty paycut, expecting to make around $50k. By having an MBA, do you think I will benefit in the long run?How much can an MBA help me in the long run for my intended career change?
Of course. Having an MBA will open lots of doors for you, and it'll surely make your transition from IB to marketing a lot smoother. Simply put, you will have an extremely difficult time breaking into marketing with JUST an undergrad degree and IB experience...but with an MBA and a summer internship in marketing, you'll be many times better off.How much can an MBA help me in the long run for my intended career change?
There are varying opinions on this. I have an MBA and I'm glad that I do, but my background was engineering and I needed more business education. I prefer formal education, because it helps accelerate the learning curve, I'm good at taking courses, writing and taking tests and I like the environment exposing you to new people and ideas.
In the end thought, it's not what you know, it's who you know.
For another viewpoint, you should check out Dan Kennedy. He's a copywrighter and off-the-wall style marketer, who believes that formal education can taint/ruin you.
You might go to a professional convention in the field your interested in marketing to and speak with vendors and marketers there for insights.
Just so you know, there are two schools-of-thougth wrt formal education and marketing.
It will help you till your end day of career, as people do managerial job in a career mostly, so and the wold is doing business so you all ways have to be up to date with managerial function, where MBA will fuel you up
